How to play a sound when your iPhone connects to your car

Want your car to greet you with an engine roar, a hype intro or your favorite song the moment you get in? Your iPhone can do it on its own — no jailbreak, no extra hardware. It works with CarPlay and with any Bluetooth car stereo, and it all runs through Apple’s free Shortcuts app.

Below are two ways to set it up: the free do-it-yourself way, and the one-tap way.

Option 1: Do it yourself with Shortcuts (free)

  1. Open the Shortcuts app (it comes with every iPhone) and go to the Automation tab.
  2. Tap “+” and choose a trigger. If your car has CarPlay, choose CarPlay › Connects. If it only has Bluetooth, choose Bluetooth, pick your car’s stereo from the list, then Is Connected.
  3. Pick “Run Immediately” so it plays without asking you to confirm every time.
  4. Add an action, for example:
    • Play Music — plays a song from your Apple Music library.
    • Speak Text — reads a line out loud with Siri’s voice (“Good morning, let’s ride”).
  5. Get in the car and test it.

It works, but there are limits:

  • Spotify songs can’t be used — streaming tracks are copy-protected.
  • Speak Text uses Siri’s voice, with no music behind it.
  • Cars often take a second to switch audio to the speakers, so the first words or notes can get cut off.
  • Making a custom intro (a voice plus background music) means editing audio yourself.

Option 2: Use Hypeman (the one-tap way)

Hypeman is an iPhone app built for exactly this. Pick a car startup sound from the library — hype, rock, luxury, chill, funny and more — or create an intro spoken by a realistic AI voice with your name in it, mixed with background music. Then:

  1. Follow the same Shortcuts steps above (CarPlay › Connects, or Bluetooth › Is Connected).
  2. For the action, search for Hypeman and pick Play Connect Hype.
  3. Done — your intro plays every time you get in, even with your phone locked.

Hypeman takes care of the annoying parts:

  • It waits for your car’s speakers to be ready, so the intro doesn’t get cut off.
  • It pauses your music during the intro, then Spotify or Apple Music picks back up.
  • You can also play a sound when you leave the car (use “Disconnects” / “Is Disconnected” and the Play Disconnect Hype action).
  • You can upload your own audio file or record one, and trim it to the best part.

The app walks you through the setup step by step. Need help? See Support.

FAQ

Does this work without CarPlay?

Yes. Use the Bluetooth trigger and pick your car’s stereo. Any car that connects to your iPhone over Bluetooth works.

Do I need to open an app every time?

No. Once the automation is set to Run Immediately, it plays on its own when you connect.

Does it work with my phone locked?

Yes. Shortcuts automations run with the iPhone locked, in your pocket or in a mount.

Why does the start of my sound get cut off?

Your car needs a moment to route audio to its speakers after connecting. Add a short silence at the start of your sound, or use an app like Hypeman that waits for the speakers automatically.
